Fruit collector Version 0.1

Fruit Collector is one of the first games I made. This is a very basic version of the game. I’ll be adding more levels and making it more challenging in the future.

Introduction

The goal of making Fruit Collector was to familiarize myself with the basics Game Maker 8.1. In the past I had worked with Game Maker 7, but with a new computer with Windows 8 it turned out Game Maker 7 couldn’t work under windows 8. Hence the update to Game Maker 8.1. The basics of Game Maker 8.1 turned out to be rather the same as Game Maker 7. I didn’t expect anything else, really, but I had to check. And the easiest way to do that was with the build in tutorial “Your first game”.

The game

Fruit Collector is a very small game with only level in which you collect as much of the moving fruit as you can to gather points with them. Fruits which can be collected are:

  • for 25 points
  • for 50 points
  • for 100 points
  • for 150 points

You have to avoid the bombs because if you click one of them it’s GAME OVER.
Both the fruit and the bombs will appear randomly. Once you click fruit it will reappear somewhere else on the screen. The bombes, however, will stay on the screen and move slowly.

It is your goal to collect as many fruit as possible and get as many points as possible before you accidentally click a bomb. Can YOU beat the top score?

Installation instructions:

  1. Download the installation file here by rightclicking on the link and chosing the option "Save".
  2. Double click on the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions.

 

4 Different kinds of fruit

Fruit Collector has 4 different kinds of fruit, each with its own amount of points you can gather. Each type of fruit moves in its own speed with the Cherries moving the slowest and the Strawberries moving the fastest. In addition of the difference in moving speed, each type of fruit can move in different directions. This will make it more of a challenge for each player.

The Bomb

Collecting fruit is nice, but the introduction of the bomb gives the real challenge. The bomb will appear randomly and will move at its own speed like the fruit. There’s one big difference with the fruit, however. When you click the bomb it will not give you more points. Instead you will lose the game.

High Scores Table

Once you have lost the game you will be presented with a high score table. You’ll automatically see where you stand in the scores table. Can you beat the top score?

Learning points for myself

It had been quite a while since I had worked with Game Maker 7, so I really had to familiarize myself with the program again. It’s not enough to just have sprites, you’ll need to make all the objects as well, or you’ll have no game to play.
It was, however, all really basic and easy to learn. Game Maker has an easy to use interface with a WYSIWYG drag-and-drop editor and that comes in real handy when you’re just starting out with making games.

I had a lot of fun making this game! With a little effort and without much knowledge I made a (very) small, basic game to play. It gives a good feeling to make a game from scratch and have it running in no time.
